LinkedIn Speaker Series - Neil Pasricha
Notes I took from the video on YouTube
On December 8, 2016, Neil Pasricha gave a talk about happiness at LinkedIn’s New York office.
Graph - over the last 50 years income has gone steadily up, but the percentage of happy people has stayed about the same
[comment: adjusted for inflation?]
Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness - is happiness something that can be achieved?
CW: Great work -> big success -> be happy
Instead: Be happy -> great work -> big success
How to start with being happy?
Based on a nun study, happier people live about 10 years longer
5 things to create positive focus in your mind, based on studies Pick one, do 20 mins a day for 20 days
- 20 min brisk nature walk
- Journal for 20 mins about positive event from the day
- 5 conscious acts of kindness (per day? per week?)
- Meditation, using headspace or similar
- 5 gratitudes (per week, so one a day)
Facing your fears
CW: motivation leads to action
Instead: action leads to motivation
“It’s easier to ACT yourself into a new way of thinking than to think yourself into a new way of acting.”
[note: I’ve seen that quote attributed to a couple different people: Jerry Sternin1 or Millard Fuller2 ]
Just do it
Seinfeld method, don’t break the chain
Everyone gets 168 hours a week, can’t buy more. Put that in 3 buckets of 56 hours
- What’s your 3rd bucket?
